Reasons for the alliance

  • Why now?

    ACCA’s story is one of expanding opportunities for our members and the next generation of professional accountants, underpinned by the highest professional and technical standards.

    For some time we’ve been open to considering alliances and partnerships that will help us advance our strategy on behalf of our members. 

    Bringing the CA and ACCA brands side-by-side is a ground-breaking move that will bring genuine and immediate value to members of both bodies, and open the door to further opportunities that we’re keen to explore on behalf of our members. 

  • Is this just for show?

    No. We are at the start of this truly unique strategic alliance. As a first step we’re immediately exploring value creation for our members as set out in the previous question.

    Looking beyond the specifics of member value, we believe this strategic alliance will benefit the profession in the wider sense. We’re bringing the ACCA and CA brands side-by-side to enable us to provide a unique proposition which is relevant to employers across all sectors, and supported by an unrivalled global network.

    We believe our alliance will enhance access to the profession and bring value to businesses and society.

  • Is this a response to the AICPA/CIMA announcement?

    No. Both ACCA and CA ANZ have completed significant research highlighting that the business world needs to be ready for more globalisation, digital connectivity and evolving governance structures.

    ACCA recently completed a major research study, Professional accountants – the future, which highlights the skills accountants will need in this evolving landscape. The alliance responds to these trends to drive more innovation and value. It is a market driven step and not a response to other organisations.

    We’re both entering into this alliance from positions of strength, with a view to becoming even stronger together, putting us in the best possible position to respond to the future trends of the profession on behalf of our members and next generation of professional accountants.

  • Is this simply a drive to increase membership numbers? How are you going to ensure there is no compromise in terms of quality or lowering of standards?

    The alliance is focussed on recognising and providing value to our members. We highly respect each other’s members and heritage. Our focus is to work together to provide enhanced benefits to members and a stronger proposition for all our other stakeholders.

    There is an opportunity for members who meet the eligibility criteria to apply for dual membership. Dual membership will be attractive to some members and is offered as a member benefit. Our current application to membership and qualification standards will be strictly adhered to - as it is for all members.

  • Is it an equal alliance/partnership?

    Yes absolutely. We are both strong brands, with a long and respected heritage, and we’re placing those brands side-by-side to bring enhanced value to our members, employers, and society.

  • Why did ACCA choose CA ANZ?

    The alliance brings together the resources of the largest global professional accountancy body with one of the world’s pre-eminent CA bodies. This enables both organisations to strengthen their reach, relevance and resources for members.

    In getting to know CA ANZ, we’ve found their values and their vision for the global profession align strongly with our own. And we feel that bringing the ACCA and CA brands side-by-side is a symbolic and important step that will shape the on-going development of the profession.

    We’re excited to be collaborating with an organisation which, like ACCA, is committed to innovation and shaping the future.

  • What's the benefit for ACCA members?

    We’ll explore how we can collaborate to provide global and local networking benefits and increased career and employability support. Perhaps most importantly, we’ll be ensuring we work together to shape the profession, building our shared reputation and influence on behalf of members of both bodies.

  • How do I apply for membership of CA ANZ?

    In outline, ACCA members will be eligible for CA ANZ membership if they are in good standing and have attained at least five years’ experience post-admittance to membership, and are currently residing in Australia or New Zealand.

    Information on how to apply can be found on the alliance pages of the CA ANZ website.

    Similar requirements will apply for CA ANZ members across the world who wish to apply for ACCA membership. Find out more in our mutual memberships area.

  • What will be the impact on current ACCA members who don’t want to also become members of CA ANZ?

    We believe this strategic alliance is very positive for all ACCA members. The alliance is the most significant of its kind globally giving us a powerful voice to work on behalf of all our members to lead and shape the profession.

    We are placing our brands side-by-side with a pre-eminent CA body, therefore enhancing the respect and influence our members have around the world.

    ACCA members would benefit from better market recognition and new CPD resources even if they do not apply for dual membership.

  • What does the alliance mean for students currently studying for the ACCA qualifications?

    There’s no impact for students pursuing our respective qualifications, but the alliance will provide a stronger platform for future career advancement through enhanced employer recognition.

    Our focus is firmly on creating a strategic alliance that will benefit our respective memberships. It should motivate students to continue to progress towards membership as it is a bold and exciting alliance. It reinforces that they have made the right choice in choosing ACCA.  

    Furthermore we are looking to enhance the services and support to technician level students and to further promote their value to employers globally, with a view to widening access to the profession.

  • Can students switch path from ACCA to CA and vice versa?

    Students should continue to study for the qualification they’ve started. There are no plans to change the qualifications as a result of our strategic alliance.

Impact on employers

  • What does this alliance mean for employers?

    As the largest global alliance of its kind it will have a louder voice to champion the role of the profession ensuring it evolves to provide the skills employers need for the future.

    Working together on professional insights will help to highlight matters relevant to employers’ growth and long term sustainability.

    ACCA and CA ANZ strongly believe professional accountants must be rounded and developed with relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The alliance will enable more opportunity to support employers.

    Through its combined network the alliance will also be better able to support employers globally.

Plans for the future

  • Is this a merger? If not, will there be one in the future?

    No, this is a strategic alliance – bringing the CA and ACCA brands side-by-side in a mutually beneficial relationship which will create opportunities on behalf of our current and future members, while continuing to leverage the value of ACCA and CA ANZ.

    The alliance will continue to look for opportunities to enhance member value and deliver increased public value as it continues to grow.

  • What are the next steps for the alliance?

    The alliance will seek to:

    • Increase the profile of both brands worldwide through their combined and unrivalled network of global offices, and enhanced support to members and other stakeholders
    • Work on initiatives for the overall development and benefit of the profession and business world including joint research and events
    • Provide access to resources, tools and educational products for members
    • Provide an opportunity for dual membership of both bodies. ACCA members resident in Australia and New Zealand will be invited to apply for CA membership and CA ANZ members will be invited to apply for ACCA membership, subject to meeting the eligibility criteria of the other body
    • Promote a strong proposition for accounting technicians globally to further widen access to the profession. 

    We will also continue to explore, with input from our members, further opportunities which will provide more value to ACCA and CA ANZ members globally.

  • Are you currently considering any other partnerships/alliances?

    We want to focus on ensuring our strategic alliance with CA ANZ brings value for our members. But we remain open to other bodies that see value in the vision and goals we and CA ANZ share. We partner with many organisations around the world to provide more opportunity and enhanced value to our members.

  • What's the long term vision - will the two brands merge?

    ACCA and CA ANZ have fantastically strong brands. The alliance places the brands side by side - there is no plan to merge the brands or create a different brand.

    For the immediate future, we’re focusing on delivering value for our members as we take the first steps in our strategic alliance. 

    We will continue to look for opportunities to provide further benefits to members as the alliance evolves.

  • Does this align with your strategy? Will it be a distraction or disruption?

    Our new strategic alliance accelerates and facilitates the delivery of our existing strategy. It will also help to deliver CA ANZ’s strategic goals. This is certainly not a change of direction - ACCA has a long history of developing partnerships and relationships that serve the interests of our members and the public.

Information about costs and fees

  • How is the work to create the strategic alliance being paid for?

    The steps we are taking are not about significant financial investment. The alliance puts our brands side-by-side to create more impact and value for our members. It enables us to generate even more benefits from our existing investment.

    ACCA continually invests on behalf of our members to further our strategic aims and build our reputation. We’ve not differentiated between investing in this and in other innovations that help us achieve our goals. 

    ACCA has significant experience in developing robust and mutually valuable partnerships and so we are realising efficiencies as we leverage our existing partnership expertise. We’re developing this strategic alliance to create value for our members, and we are carefully managing our resources as always.

  • Will the student/member fees increase?

    There will be no fee changes as a result of this strategic alliance.
